Canvas Art

1.) What is a canvas transfer? How is a canvas transfer made?

The transfer process is done by hand, one print at a time. The work begins with lifting the original inks from the print paper with a time consuming series of chemical treatments, water baths and drying which forms a thin film capturing the artwork. The ink and a thin layer of the original paper is separated and applied to a specially coated canvas uniquely designed to accommodate the transfer process. Upon drying, the newly transferred print is treated with a UV protective coating to preserve the brightness and color contrasts of the original for many years. The result is a stunning work on canvas requiring only an occasional dusting or damp cloth to maintain its beauty.

2.) How long does it take for a canvas transfer to be shipped?

Canvas transfers usually leave our frame shop within two weeks of the date ordered. Regular prints are prepared and framed off the shelf. Canvas transferred prints require extra time to ship because the process to produce them is time and effort intensive. Shipping time from our shop depends on your location and the requested shipping method. Canvas transfers are shipped UPS ground service unless otherwise requested.

3.) Can any print be canvas transferred?

While most of our prints may be transferred to canvas, certain artists and/or publishers do not allow their prints to be transferred. When previewing a gallery, if the canvas transfer option is not offered for a particular print, restrictions have been applied.

4.) Can a canvas transfer be returned for credit or exchange?

Canvas transfers are all special orders, and cannot be returned unless they arrive damaged or defective. Framed-Arts.com requires notification of damaged, defective or improperly filled orders within 10 days. We will be happy to provide a refund for damaged, defective and improperly filled orders.

5.) Does Framed-Arts.com provide UV protection for canvas transfers?

All canvas transfers from Framed-Art.com have a protective UV coating. Although your artwork is protected with a UV resistant coating, hanging your artwork in direct sunlight is not recommended.

6) What is a stretched canvas?

A stretched canvas is a canvas artwork stretched over a wooden framework, a “stretcher bar”. The wooden framework provides the rigid support necessary for framing or hanging your artwork. When an artist is painting on canvas, they are painting on stretched canvas.

7) Does Framed-Arts.com custom frame canvas transfers?

Yes. Museum wrap canvas transfers can be framed with our simple and intuitive online framing software. Gallery wrap canvas transfers are designed to be hung as is, without need for framing.

8.) Does canvas transfer artwork require any special care?

Framed-Arts.com finishes all canvas transfers with a very durable UV protecting laminate. Although your artwork will have UV protection, artwork should not be subjected to direct sunlight. Occasional cleaning with a cloth dampened with soap and warm water is all that is needed to preserve your artwork for many years.
