At Framed-Arts.com, we offer a wide selection of custom framed folk art prints, from antique to modern folk art. The folk artists and pieces we feature can be browsed from our custom search page, while this page contains information on the folk art movement. Read on to find out about folk art in general, including how antique folk works differ from modern folk art.

Folk Art
The term folk art refers to a range of objects that reflect the craft traditions and/ or traditional social values of a specific social group. Modern folk art is generally produced by people with limited academic artistic training and little desire to emulate "fine art." Folk artists tend to use established techniques and styles of the particular region or culture to which they belong. Forms of folk art include painting, sculpture, textiles, and other decorative art forms. Occasionally, functional objects such as tools and costumes are considered folk art.

Typically, folk art is not influenced by changes in the academic or fine art world. For the most part, folk art does not include works created by professional artists or sold as "high art" to patrons of fine art.

Antique folk art differs from traditional art or modern folk art in that while such objects are collected today based on artistic merit, they were not originally intended as art work. Some examples of antique folk art include carved figures, weathervanes, old store signs, carousel horses, cast iron doorstops, painted game boards, and many other similar types of "whimsical" antiques.

Other categories of art that overlap with folk art are naïve art, outsider art, traditional art, popular art, and even working class art. As might be expected, these terms each have different connotations, but are all used interchangeably at times with the term folk art, for which a generally agreed-upon definition has been difficult to come by.
